Eight days in a home that was not supposed to be open
Larry Darnell Burton, 74, was last seen at 10:30 p.m. on July 2, 2025, at an adult care home on Moody Street in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was reported missing the next day, July 3. Burton was living with dementia, and according to his family he had been at the home for just eight days.
His family has said that Moses Cone Hospital referred Burton to the facility because it was believed to be licensed. It was not. State records showed the Moody Street operation was not licensed by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Health Service Regulation — even though the home had previously been licensed as a family care home before closing in January 2022.
After Burton disappeared, the facility was shut down, and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services urged the Guilford County District Attorney’s Office to press charges against it. Greensboro police later issued an arrest warrant for the operator, Hazel Mae Forman, who posted a $10,000 bond after her arrest.
The search
Greensboro police searched multiple locations for Burton, assisted by the Greensboro Fire Department Search and Rescue Team. A Silver Alert was issued for him; it expired in October 2025, and his information was entered into a national missing-persons database. A $5,000 reward was offered for information leading to his whereabouts.
None of it produced him. By late July 2025 — more than three weeks into the search — police were still looking, and a year later his family was still publicly asking for answers, marking his birthday and the one-year anniversary of his disappearance without him.
The guilty plea — and the question it did not answer
In 2026, Hazel Mae Forman pleaded guilty in Guilford County District Court to operating an adult care home facility without a license. A judge ordered her to pay a $50 fine and $183 in court costs, with no jail time and no probation, closing the criminal case that grew out of Burton’s disappearance.
The plea punished the licensing violation. It did not answer the central question. Burton’s daughter, Latonya Swift, said simply: “I miss my daddy.” What happened to Larry Darnell Burton after the night of July 2, 2025, remains unknown.
What is not known
No public account establishes where Burton went after he was last seen at the Moody Street home, whether he left on foot or was picked up, or whether anyone saw him afterward. Police have not announced any evidence of what happened to him, and no report of him being found — alive or deceased — has ever been published. For a 74-year-old man with dementia, missing for more than a year, the silence is the case.
