The open door
Stacey Kelekoma’s boyfriend went to the store. When he came back to his residence in Anahola, on Kauai’s east side, the door was open. The television was on. Stacey’s slippers were sitting by the door.
Stacey was gone.
She was 14 years old — Hawaiian and Portuguese descent, 5’5″ and 100 pounds, brown hair and brown eyes, with a round freckle like a beauty mark on her left ankle and a 6-to-8-inch scar on her elbow. The date on the file is August 25, 1986; she is listed as missing since August 18. She has not been seen since.
That is very nearly the entire public record of the day: an open door, a television playing to an empty room, a pair of slippers. Forty years later, the scene is still frozen exactly that way.
Runaway, then not
At first, Stacey was classified as a runaway. It was 1986, she was 14, and runaway was the default box for a teenager who wasn’t where she was supposed to be. The classification did what it always does: it lowered the temperature of the search.
But Stacey never came home, never called, never surfaced — not in weeks, not in years, not in four decades. The classification was eventually changed: endangered missing child. The slippers by the door took on a different meaning. Fourteen-year-olds who run away take their shoes.
In 1986, there was one reported sighting: an airline steward claimed to have seen Stacey in California. It was never confirmed. It is the only sighting in the file, and it led nowhere.
Her case is carried by the Kauai County Police Department (M-10904), the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (1152415), and NamUs (MP4590). The 411GINA foundation maintains a flyer. Age-progressed images show what the 14-year-old might look like as an adult. She would be 55 years old today — she turned 55 on October 1, 2026, one day before this article’s publication.
Theories: what might have happened
Abduction. The theory the scene supports: an open door, a television left on mid-program, slippers left behind — the signs of someone interrupted, not someone leaving. A 14-year-old girl alone in a house, briefly, in the middle of the day. Forty years of total silence since.
She ran away and met harm. The original classification. Against it now: no contact in 40 years, no confirmed sighting, and the slippers — runaways take their shoes.
The California sighting. An airline steward’s unconfirmed 1986 claim is the only reported sighting in four decades. Without corroboration, it remains what it was: a claim, not a lead.
