The car on the interstate
On the morning of May 19, 2016, nineteen-year-old Logan Schiendelman was acting strangely. His grandmother — who was raising him — noticed it. He seemed paranoid, agitated, not himself. He left the house in Tumwater, Washington, in his Chrysler Sebring.
Hours later, the Sebring was found wrecked on the shoulder of Interstate 5, south of Tumwater. The car had crashed — but Logan wasn’t in it. His wallet was inside. His phone was inside. He was gone.
A witness reported seeing a man matching Logan’s description running from the crash area. That was the last reported sighting. He has never been seen since.
Who Logan was
Logan Schiendelman was 19, living in Tumwater with his grandmother. He was 6 feet tall, about 190 pounds (sources conflict: a Dateline report lists 5’11” and 160 lbs). He’d had a difficult start in life — adopted as a child, he’d struggled, and those close to him knew he was dealing with personal demons. But he was loved, and he was trying.
His grandmother has been the constant in the decade since: keeping his case alive, working with investigators, refusing to let him become a file number. “He’s my baby,” she has said. “I just want him home.”
The investigation
The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office investigated Logan’s disappearance. The wrecked car on I-5 — wallet and phone inside, driver gone — suggested a young man in crisis who’d fled on foot. Searches of the area around the crash site found nothing. No confirmed sightings followed the initial witness report.
Investigators looked into whether Logan might have been experiencing a mental-health crisis that morning — the paranoia his grandmother described — and whether he’d gotten into another vehicle, either willingly or not. The I-5 corridor is one of the busiest highways in the Pacific Northwest; a young man on foot beside it could have hitched a ride, been picked up, or come to harm in any number of ways.
The case was featured on Disappeared and in anniversary coverage by The Olympian and Seattle media. Ten years on, there has never been a confirmed sighting, and no trace of Logan has ever been found.
Theories: what might have happened
Mental-health crisis and misadventure. The leading theory: Logan was in crisis that morning, crashed or abandoned his car, fled on foot, and came to harm — by exposure, by accident, or by his own hand — in the woods or along the interstate corridor. Supports it: his grandmother’s account of his paranoia, the abandoned wallet and phone, the witness who saw him running. Undercuts it: extensive searching found no body.
Picked up from the roadside. A 19-year-old on foot beside I-5 could have gotten into a vehicle — willingly, or not. Supports it: the corridor’s traffic, the absence of any remains near the crash. Unresolved: no witness to a pickup, no subsequent trace.
Foul play. With no body and no confirmed sightings, it can’t be excluded — but there is no evidence pointing to a specific perpetrator or encounter.
