The car on the Bluegrass Parkway
Crystal Rogers was last seen on July 3, 2015, at the Bardstown, Kentucky, home she shared with her boyfriend, Brooks Houck, their two-year-old son, and her four other children. Houck — the last person known to see her alive — said she was on her phone playing games when he went to bed. When he woke up, she was gone. Her car was gone from the driveway.
Two days later, on July 5, her 2007 Chevrolet Impala was found parked by mile marker 14 of the Bluegrass Parkway. The keys were still in the ignition. Her purse and cell phone were inside. One tire was flat — investigators would later determine it had been intentionally damaged.
That same day, her mother, Sherry Ballard, officially reported her missing.
Crystal Rogers was 35 years old, a mother of five. She has never been seen again. Her body has never been found.
The father who wouldn’t stop — and the shot in the woods
If Crystal’s disappearance was the wound, what happened sixteen months later was salt in it.
Tommy Ballard, Crystal’s father, had become the public face of the family’s search — relentless, furious, everywhere. In November 2016, he went hunting with his grandson. He was shot to death. His gun had not been fired. The killing was widely believed to be connected to Crystal’s disappearance.
Tommy Ballard’s murder remains unsolved.
Bardstown, a small bourbon-country town forty miles south of Louisville, began to feel like the center of something much darker than one missing woman. An FBI agent would later describe the tangle of cases there; locals started calling it cursed ground.
Ten years to three convictions — and still no body
For nearly a decade, there were no arrests. Brooks Houck lived freely in the same town where Crystal’s five children grew up without their mother. He came in and cooperated every time investigators asked — brought his own notes, his own timeline — and walked out every single time.
Then, in 2023, the dam broke: Houck and two other area men — Joseph Lawson and his father Steve Lawson — were indicted on charges connected to the case.
On May 30, 2025, a jury in Bowling Green convicted Steven Lawson, 54, of criminal conspiracy to commit murder and tampering with physical evidence. In July 2025, Brooks Houck was convicted of Crystal’s murder and sentenced to life in prison. Joseph Lawson was convicted of conspiracy.
Three convictions. Ten years. And still — no body. Crystal Rogers’ whereabouts remain unknown. As her daughter Tori, who was eleven when her mother vanished, told the court: “I still think we’ll find her, but maybe not the way we want to. It’s harder every day.”
The case drew national true-crime attention: Oxygen’s original series The Disappearance of Crystal Rogers (streaming on Peacock), and Dateline‘s November 2025 episode “The Trouble in Bardstown.”
Theories: what might have happened
This section is shorter than most, because the central question — who killed Crystal Rogers — has been answered by a jury. What remains is where.
Where is Crystal’s body? Prosecutors proved murder and conspiracy without a body — a “no-body” prosecution. The Lawsons were convicted of conspiracy and evidence tampering, which strongly implies the body was moved and concealed. But the location has never been disclosed publicly, and the family still doesn’t have a place to grieve.
Who killed Tommy Ballard? Officially unsolved and officially unlinked — but almost nobody in Bardstown believes the timing was coincidence. A father shot dead while hunting with his grandson, sixteen months into demanding answers about his daughter. If the cases are connected, the killer may still be free.
