The last night

In the early morning hours of March 29, 2008 — a Saturday — 22-year-old Bekime “Becky” Elshani was last seen in the 100 block of West Rockrimmon Boulevard in Colorado Springs. She was wearing blue jeans, a pink-and-white shirt, and a black jacket. She has never been seen or heard from since.

Two days later, on the evening of March 31, Becky’s father reported her missing to the Colorado Springs Police Department. The official state cold-case file records her as last seen near her residence in the 6000 block of Twin Oaks Drive in the early hours of March 31, 2008 — the hours just before her father made the report. The surviving records give slightly different anchor points for the same weekend; what is consistent across them is that she was last seen in those final March hours, in that part of Colorado Springs, and then she was gone.

She had recently reconciled with her live-in boyfriend, Daniel Dereere — a relationship the Charley Project describes as troubled, with arrests on both sides in 2007. The Doe Network reports that there was an argument between Becky and her boyfriend that weekend; she left with him, and she hasn’t been seen since.

The boyfriend who died before police could ask

On the evening of March 31, officers went to the apartment in the 6000 block of Twin Oaks Drive — near Academy and Dublin — to do a welfare check on Becky. As they approached, they heard a gunshot. Inside, they found the body of Daniel Dereere. He had died by suicide. He left no note.

There was no sign of Becky at the scene and no indication of a struggle in the apartment.

Dereere took his own life the day before he was supposed to appear in court to answer harassment and computer-crimes charges — he had allegedly hacked into Becky’s MySpace page in January 2008 and posted nude photos of her. He was never questioned about her disappearance. Whatever he knew died with him.

What investigators did find: they searched Dereere’s red Toyota 4-Runner and recovered unspecified evidence indicating that foul play may have been involved in Becky’s disappearance. Dereere had driven the 4-Runner to Woodland Park in Teller County — into the mountains west of Colorado Springs — just hours after Becky was last seen. A search of the park area turned up no indication of her whereabouts. Case-coverage video of the disappearance has described blood evidence in the vehicle and a digital-forensics trail showing that drive west after an intense argument; the official record confirms the drive to Woodland Park and the evidence recovered from the 4-Runner.

Criminal involvement is suspected in Becky’s disappearance. The case remains unsolved.

A case of fragments

Becky Elshani’s case is the kind that falls through every crack. No national podcast has taken it up. There is no Wikipedia page, no anniversary coverage, no family’s public campaign visible in the record. The principal coverage is a true-crime video — Still Missing: Colorado Cold Case — Bekime Elshani: Mountain Drive — and scattered cold-case listings. (Note: some listings and this article’s earlier version spelled the boyfriend’s surname “Deerere”; the Charley Project and police-record sources give it as Dereere.)

What survives in the official record — the last sighting, the argument, the drive to Woodland Park, the evidence in the 4-Runner, the suicide that foreclosed questioning — is the whole of the known public facts. They have been pulled, and they have not yet produced Becky.

Theories: what might have happened

She was killed during or after the argument. This is where the evidence points: an argument, a woman who vanishes the same night, evidence in the boyfriend’s vehicle indicating foul play, and a drive into the mountains hours after she was last seen. What is unproven: there is no body, no confirmed cause or manner of death, and no charges were ever filed. Daniel Dereere was never charged with anything; he is dead and cannot defend himself, so this remains a theory, not a finding.

The drive to Woodland Park was the key. Investigators searched the area Dereere drove to and found nothing. It is possible whatever happened did not happen there — or that it did, and the search simply missed it. Without Dereere’s account — or a witness, or remains — the middle of the story is missing. Any account that fills it in from these facts alone is speculation.

Corrections (October 2026 fact-check): This article previously stated that Becky’s age and date of disappearance were “not publicly confirmed” — that was wrong. Verified records now give: BEFORE “Age at disappearance: Not publicly confirmed” → AFTER “22 (born December 27, 1985)” (Colorado Cold Case Files; Charley Project; Texas EquuSearch). BEFORE “Last seen: date not publicly confirmed” → AFTER “March 29, 2008, ~1:15 a.m., 100 block of West Rockrimmon Boulevard” (Charley Project; Texas EquuSearch flyer); the state cold-case file records the report on March 31, 2008, with a last-seen window in the early hours near the 6000 block of Twin Oaks Drive — the discrepancy is disclosed in the article. BEFORE “Height / build: Not publicly detailed” → AFTER “5’5″, 110–115 lbs; blonde hair, blue eyes; pierced ears; lower-back tattoo (described as a fairy in the official listing and Doe Network, as a cross by the Charley Project)”. BEFORE “Case numbers: Not publicly confirmed” → AFTER “CSPD 08-10091; NamUs MP7408” (Colorado Cold Case Files; Doe Network). The boyfriend’s surname was corrected from “Deerere” to “Dereere” (Charley Project). Found an error? Tell us via the About page and we will fix it promptly and note the change here.
