Walking away on the railroad tracks
On October 21, 2021, Ashley Nicole Goodrich was last seen on the railroad tracks, walking away from her home on Prospect Street in Fair Haven, a small town in Vermont’s Rutland County. She was 34. She was never seen again.
Ashley had married Garrett Given the month before, in September 2021, and had recently gotten custody of her son. Her family was initially unconcerned when she dropped out of sight — partly because she had done so before, and partly because her husband said he was still getting texts from her phone number and Facebook messages from her account. Her husband told police she was near Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, but she was not found there; he said she was in hiding and didn’t want anyone to know where she was.
She was not reported missing until December 29, 2022 — more than a year after she was last seen. Vermont State Police list her as an endangered missing person and consider her disappearance suspicious. Her family believes foul play is involved and has said someone in her circle knows what happened to her. No one has been charged. No trace of Ashley has ever been found.
The investigation
Vermont State Police carry the case, with the Fair Haven Police Department involved in the local effort. On June 30, 2023, investigators executed two search warrants at Ashley and Garrett’s house — one search brought in heavy equipment, including excavators. In October 2025, Fair Haven Police Chief Humphries told local media: “It’s definitely not a cold case. It’s active. We meet regularly on it. We still follow up leads.”
The family’s reward for information leading to Ashley’s recovery and the conviction of those responsible stands at $25,000, increased from $10,000 in October 2025. The family has kept her name alive with anniversary vigils and social-media campaigns, including organized searches of areas of interest around Fair Haven.
Theories: what might have happened
Foul play by someone she knew. This is where her family lands: they believe her disappearance is linked to foul play and that someone she was involved with knows what happened. Vermont State Police consider the disappearance suspicious. Status: no charges, no arrests; the presumption of innocence applies to anyone named in connection with this case unless and until a court finds otherwise.
She went into hiding voluntarily. This is her husband’s account: he told police she was in hiding and didn’t want to be found, and said he was receiving messages from her accounts after she vanished. Status: investigators have not accepted this account — she was reported missing, her case is classified as endangered missing and suspicious, and the investigation remains active.
