Asleep on the living room floor
Between 11:30 p.m. on February 15 and 12:30 a.m. on February 16, 1992, three-year-old Randi Layton Evers was asleep on the living room floor of his family’s home on East Rochelle Avenue in Las Vegas. He was wrapped in a blanket.
By morning, he was gone.
He was wearing a black shirt and black pants with a blue diamond design on the knees. He had no shoes on. A three-year-old does not dress himself, walk out of a house in the middle of the night, and vanish. Someone took Randi Evers — from inside his own home, while his family slept.
Thirty-four years later, he has never been found.
Who Randi was
Randi Layton Evers was three years old — blond, blue-eyed, small for his age, with a scar near his left eye and his hair worn with a two-to-six-inch tail in the back. He had a history of severe inner-ear infections that caused loss of equilibrium; surgeons had inserted tubes in his ears to alleviate it. He was the son of Mike Evers and his stepmother Tina Evers.
At three, Randi’s world was the size of a living room floor and a blanket. The public record holds almost nothing else about him — no favorite toy, no quoted memory, just the physical description on the missing-child posters and an age-progression image showing what he might have looked like at 32. The thinness of the file is its own testimony: he was barely more than a baby.
The investigation
A child taken from inside a home in the middle of the night narrows the universe of explanations brutally. Either someone came in, or someone already inside did something. Investigators have never said publicly which they believe.
What is known publicly is the shape of the night: the window between 11:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m., the blanket, the missing shoes — details that suggest haste, or a child carried sleeping. There is no public record of forced entry, no public suspect, no public forensic anchor. The case lives in the databases — NCMEC, the Charley Project — and in the memories of a family that has waited 34 years.
Theories: what might have happened
Thirty-four years, almost no public facts. The theories are bounded by the room he vanished from:
An intruder. Someone entered the home in the night and took a sleeping three-year-old. The missing shoes and the blanket suggest a child carried out quickly. But there is no public evidence of a break-in, and no intruder was ever identified.
Someone inside the home. The statistical reality of child disappearances: when a small child vanishes from inside a house overnight, investigators look first at who was in the house. Nothing has ever been made public about the family’s role — no charges, no named suspects, no statements beyond the fact of the disappearance. It would be unjust to go further than noting that the question exists.
He wandered. A three-year-old with equilibrium problems from chronic ear infections, no shoes, in the middle of the night, in February. He would not have gotten far, and Las Vegas in 1992 was searched. No trace was ever found — no small body, no blanket, nothing. This theory has never fit the facts.
