Last seen in Table Rock

Linda Dillard lived in Fairbury. In mid-June 2021 she joined friends in Pawnee County — southeast Nebraska farm country, where a stranger is noticed and a neighbor’s absence is felt.

Court records: they drank and smoked meth at a farmstead. In the early hours of June 16, Linda argued with a man at the property; around 3:30 a.m. she left on foot. She has not been seen or heard from since.

Investigators later found a wig belonging to Linda at the property — and her clothing. The outfit she wore earlier that night (white tank top, denim shorts, lace-up boots) was recovered by police. What she walked out in — black t-shirt, DKNY boxer shorts, Birkenstock sandals, turquoise necklace — has never been recovered. Neither has she.

The woman behind the flyer

The flyer reads like a portrait in ink: “Heaven’s Door” under her chin; two large dark wings with a caricature across her chest; two Derringer pistols on her abdomen; wings with “DCD” on her lower back; a date on the back of her neck; “Laquita” on her arm; a flower on her wrist. Brown hair she might dye blonde; known to wear wigs, possibly a purple-and-white one.

She was 5’0″ with hip dysplasia, which made walking long distances difficult; she may have used a cane. She wore a lot of jewelry. An unmistakable person — the kind witnesses remember. And yet, in more than five years, no confirmed sighting.

She was a mother and a grandmother. “I want everyone to remember that Linda has a family, she’s a mother, she’s a grandmother,” lead investigator Eric Jones said during the 2022 search.

The three-day search

Nine months after Linda disappeared, the State Patrol mounted one of its largest searches: March 24–26, 2022, ~150 volunteers and officers from 10+ agencies combed the Table Rock State Wildlife Management Area and 200–300 acres of private ground.

Partners included the State Patrol, Nebraska Game and Parks, the state Emergency Management Agency, NecroSearch International, Kansas mounted units, K9 teams (Bella Luna, Rusty, Jinx), human-remains-detection dogs, UNL forensic anthropology, and the Midwest Archaeological Center. Rugged terrain was ridden on horseback.

“New information and environmental conditions make this the right time and place for a search,” Jones said. Linda’s daughter, Linda Schaber, was there: “We definitely miss her,” she told the volunteers. “I would say I’m mainly hopeful for resolution.”

Three days. Hundreds of acres. They did not find her.

The investigation

The case has never been shelved. In September 2026, the State Patrol renewed its appeal for Linda, pairing it with an unrelated open homicide — the 2014 killing of 34-year-old Hai Nguyen of Lincoln, whose body was found near Beaver Crossing. “While not related, both investigations remain open today,” the Patrol said. The renewed appeal is the most significant public movement in Linda’s case in years — a signal investigators believe someone out there knows something. Nebraska Crime Stoppers offers a $1,000 reward.

Theories: what might have happened

Five years, numerous searches, no trace. With so little public information, honesty requires keeping this short:

Foul play. The investigators’ own reading: Linda may have been the victim of “theft, assault, kidnapping, and/or murder.” The argument, the wig and clothing left behind — it points toward someone having harmed her. No one has been named or charged.

An accident or medical event. A 55-year-old with hip dysplasia, alone on foot at 3:30 a.m., could suffer a medical crisis or a fall. But 150 searchers with cadaver dogs, mounted units, and forensic anthropologists found nothing — and neither have numerous searches since.

Voluntary disappearance. No note, no plan, no contact in more than five years; classified Endangered Missing under suspicious circumstances. Least supported.
